Surrealism is the art of the impossible made specific. This collection runs to fifty-eight works: faces fragmenting into layered planes, koi swimming through air, figures emerging from stone strata, a woman in a sunflower field holding a circular mirror that shows something other than her reflection. Strange, but composed and controlled rather than chaotic, which is what makes surreal work hang well in an ordinary room.

Surreal art rewards a spot where people pause. A hallway, a stairwell landing, the wall opposite a dining table, anywhere a guest has thirty seconds to notice the second idea inside the image. It is a conversation piece in the literal sense, and it tends to date more slowly than trend-led decorative art because the appeal is the concept rather than the colour of the season.

The surrealism movement began in the 1920s and Salvador Dali remains its most recognisable figure. We hold a dedicated Dali collection separately if that is the direction you are heading.
